The Age-Old Boy-Mum Conundrum
I have been a cheerleader of small shops for years now. You may not have noticed, but if you walk into the boy’s department of pretty much any high street shop, you’re guaranteed two options: navy blue, and various means of transportation. Everywhere. Delighted though I am to see dinosaurs finally starting to make an appearance in the girl’s section, I am still limited to cladding my sons in tractors, cars and the occasional helicopter. It was on a fateful night three years ago that my small shop addiction began – I stumbled upon a Love Bee Baby Harry Potter print romper on Pinterest, and the rest is history.
Handmade by a fellow military wife and with whimsical unisex prints ranging from foxes to Quidditch, my first order was unapologetically huge. The lovely thing about buying from independent businesses is that you become a part of their journey. I have gone from exchanging a few polite, business-like emails about opening dates, to watching Laura’s boys growing up and business grow right alongside them into a team, which her husband left the military to join. Now we chat about everything, because being part of the Love Bee family is about more than clothes.
With each collection meticulously planned to detail using the work of independent illustrators, the Autumn collection is so anticipated that it holds a spot on our calendar every year. I would love to say that this year is my favourite, but I’m guilty of saying that every single time… in my defence: it’s true! Nova’s newborn outfit was a footed bee romper that sits in her memory box to this day, next to a double knot hat in every single print. I’m not even exaggerating… I have saved them for my grandchildren! Made of organic cotton and designed with attention to detail, Love Bee is a zero-waste company with products that are good quality so hold their value, allowing for selling preloved when children insist on growing out of everything, and reinvesting in new prints… friends to the planet all the way.
I know some people buy a few handmade outfits and save them for special occasions, but everyday is special in some way with my little ones (well okay, admittedly not the ones where they shave each other or appear from the garden holding a feral cat by the tail *one of those two things actually happened, I will leave you to hazard a guess as to which*) so they’re part of our everyday wardrobe since we discovered ecover as a decent stain remover.
The seasons are changing, there’s a chill in the air and leaves are falling ready to be kicked about:
