Can you smell Autumn yet?!
Come rain or shine, the first thing I do when I wake up is head to the back of the house and throw open the double doors – it blows away the cobwebs beautifully. This last week of mornings have been feeling fresh and even a little crisp, which tells me it isn’t long before I can justify oven-fresh croissants for breakfast (as if I needed an excuse!)
When it comes to shopping for the seasons – Autumn is most definitely my favourite! Filling little wardrobes with lumpy knitwear, woodland animal prints and thick tights makes my heart happy. In previous years I have always steered clear of colour, reaching almost exclusively for safe neutrals… but this year is different. I don’t know whether it’s because we have spent the majority of the last year or so indoors, or whether my children suddenly seem to be growing too fast for comfort – but this year I’ve gravitated towards pieces that are a little more… fun!
Nova Wears –
When it comes to babies and younger toddlers, rather than having a few hundred miniature garments floating about the house that will be worn no more than twice each, I prefer to invest in ten or so high-quality pieces, that all sit beautifully together. The bold colours and sweet woodland details that Boden have brought out for the chillier seasons instantly had me swooning and thinking of small legs clad in cable knit tights sticking out of brown leather boots. This is Nova’s first Autumn on her feet – and we plan to spend it exploring, crunching our way through leaves and devouring many a hot chocolate in the woods.
If you are reading this from Britain, I think we can all agree that this summer was somewhat anticlimactic. Heatwave after heatwave was promised on the news, filling my head with visions of lunches in the garden and long, balmy evenings in front of the log-burner… but few were delivered. We spent the majority of this summer a bit… well, soggy. I am therefore ready to throw myself wholeheartedly into crumple season, and those sweet evenings will have been preceded by days in orchards picking fruit with the children (and, let’s face it, pleading with them not to take one single bite out of every apple in the orchard.) For those days, there is no two ways about it: clothes featuring woodland animals wearing knitwear are essential.

For me, there really is nothing sweeter than seeing my cosy little ones toddling around in a mixture of cord and knit, smelling faintly like bonfire and roasted marshmallows. In anticipation of her big brothers introducing her to the wonders of muddy puddle splashing, I decided that faffing about with about nine different ‘splash-resistant’ layers just wasn’t going to cut it, so took the plunge and invested in a waterproof snowsuit, and I’m tempted to match her brother in one – I do love twinning them! If they made one in my size, I would be wearing it as we speak (in early September… because I live in England.)

If ever a delivery left me feeling ready for candles, crackling fires and long, cold walks looking down at flushed faces beaming up at me – it’s this one. What’s your favourite thing about this time of year?

That snowsuit is beautiful, and I LOVE hedgehogs. They are my favourite animal (if I’m not too old to still have a “favourite”)

Good choice darling! Not only are you never too old to have a favourite, but you’re never too old to discuss it for twenty minutes over dinner… as we established last night! I’m currently going through a highland cow obsession xxx
